While healthy eating is essential to maintain a good physical condition in general, it’s not always as easy as it seems. Most of us have busy schedules it can be difficult to find the time to eat never mind preparing and cooking it ourselves.

However when it comes to our children, we encourage healthy eating habits from a young age so that it becomes normal for them.

A mother from Canada, complained about her son’s school staff when they regarded his home-lunch as unhealthy and threw it in the bin.

Durham Catholic District School introduced a healthy eating initiative and started serving the kids healthy food only. They asked from the parents to support this idea and mind what they put in their children’s lunch boxes.

This mom packed her son a slice of banana bread which was his favourite. Much to her surprise, the teacher considered this unhealthy because it had chocolate chips in it so in front of the whole class she grabbed it and threw it in the trash. The young boy who was crying and upset only had grapes for lunch that day, since the teacher threw the rest away.

His mother Elaina Daoust was enraged that her son had to go through such an ordeal.

“He came home with a chart (listing healthy snack ideas) and told me he and the teacher talked about it and healthy choices. She also sent a note to me. I was really, really, really mad for several reasons,” Elaina told The Star.

Some of the items that were forbidden for lunch included goldfish crackers, juice boxes, granola bars, chocolate milk, string cheese, and fruit snacks.

It appeared that Elaina’s son wasn’t the only one who was left without his lunch since thirty other parents said their kids experienced the same thing.

However  the school feels they had the right to take the unhealthy food from the kids as healthy eating is now part of the school curriculum.

But not everyone agreed with their policy as James MacKinnon, a teaching and learning consultant with the school board says “There is nowhere in our policy or procedures that says our staff is allowed to take food away from a student.”
