Have you ever dreamt of living in a unique and extraordinary home? Jo Ann Ussery, a remarkable woman, turned her dreams into reality by transforming a decommissioned Boeing 727 into a fully functional mansion. This incredible transformation not only provided her with a one-of-a-kind dwelling but also saved her from the hassle of finding an affordable and spacious house for her and her two children.
Back in 1993, Ussery’s home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed, and she found herself in need of a new place to live. With limited funds, she initially considered getting a trailer. However, her brother-in-law, an air traffic controller, came up with an unconventional idea – why not live in an airplane? Ussery was open to the idea and soon fell in love with a Boeing 727 that was about to be broken up for parts. And the best part? The price, including shipping, was only $2,000!
To make this Boeing 727 her own, Ussery invested less than $30,000 in renovations. She parked the plane by a lake on her property, securing it with concrete to prevent any movement during the renovation process. With an interior measuring 1,500 square feet, Ussery had plenty of space to work with. She upgraded the insulation, laid new flooring, and added personal touches to create a comfortable living space.
Inside, the transformed plane boasted three bedrooms, a living area, a kitchen, and even a laundry room. Ussery didn’t stop there – she even transformed the cockpit into a luxurious master bathroom, complete with a soaking tub. As the plane overlooked the lake, it gave the feeling of floating in midair, providing a unique and tranquil experience.
What makes this project even more remarkable is that Ussery did all the remodeling work by herself. From 1995 to 1999, she called this converted jet her home. Eventually, Ussery decided to open her extraordinary creation to the world as a museum. Unfortunately, while being transported, the plane tragically fell off the carriage and was destroyed. Despite this heartbreaking ending, we are fortunate to have breathtaking snapshots of this masterpiece.
