Veteran unable to pay for his groceries turns around to hear customer say “It’s our turn”

We all face tough times in life, and in those moments, we deserve the love and support of those around us to get back on our feet. This is especially true for the brave souls who have served their country without seeking rewards in return. Sadly, many veterans are left to struggle upon returning from duty, with limited benefits that are often insufficient for a comfortable life. It’s even harder for them to navigate civilian life, not knowing where to turn for help.

Larry Robeson, a Vietnam veteran, knows this struggle all too well. He was down on his luck and uncertain about his next steps. However, fate had a surprise in store for him at a grocery store in Las Vegas. Larry crossed paths with the Fox 5 Surprise Squad, a team known for their acts of kindness, who were there to pay for people’s groceries.

Despite his financial struggles, Larry had taken his disabled veteran friend, Stephanie, to the store. Stephanie, who was buying food for herself and her dogs, admitted that she was down to her last $50 and unsure about what to do next. Little did they know that their lives were about to change.

Dave Hall, the reporter leading the Surprise Squad, approached Stephanie and informed her that he and his team would cover the cost of her groceries. Stephanie was overjoyed with this unexpected act of generosity. As Dave spoke with Stephanie, he noticed Larry standing quietly behind her. It turned out that Larry, a friend of Stephanie’s husband, had established the Bones for Blankets club years ago. The club’s mission was to provide blankets to homeless veterans living on the streets. Larry started this initiative after three fellow veterans tragically froze to death, wanting to ensure that no more veterans suffered the same fate.

Larry shared how Stephanie’s husband, who worked as a truck driver, spent a lot of time away from home. As a result, Larry stepped in to keep Stephanie company and help her cope with the challenges she faced due to her disability. He believed that no veteran should experience what Stephanie was going through.

Dave Hall was determined to make sure Larry didn’t leave the store without the Surprise Squad team paying for his groceries too. Larry had only planned to purchase dish soap and candy, but Dave insisted, “You served us. It’s our turn to serve you now.” Overwhelmed with gratitude, Larry roamed the store picking out whatever he wanted. The total came to $278, and as Dave and the others settled the bill, Larry couldn’t hold back his tears.

“This is just overwhelming. I’ve been taking care of myself since I was 13,” Larry said, his voice filled with emotion.
