Imagine encountering a mysterious creature that resembles a “werewolf” by the side of the road. This poor dog, with its scaly skin, broken tail, and tattered fur, stood alone for months, untouched by anyone’s compassion. People turned away, afraid and uncertain about what this animal could be. But then, a stranger decided to act…
At an orchard in Madera Ranchos, California, this “werewolf” remained a frightful sight. Its mangy appearance, skinny frame, and bald patches evoked fear in the hearts of those who crossed its path. The dog’s skin, rough and scaly, only had a trace of black fur remaining on its head and neck.
Months passed, and the animal suffered silently, abandoned and sick. Its presence was met with blind eyes and hushed whispers. But thankfully, a guardian angel quietly entered the scene. A compassionate woman decided that this dog was worth her time and attention. She stopped, evaluated the situation, and made a call for help. It was then that Megan Bowe, founder of Bowe’s Adoptable Rescued Pup, answered the call.
“When I saw how bad off he was, I was about ready to cry,” Megan shared with The Dodo. “He was really on his last leg. He was depressed and could barely even stand up.”
Megan quickly discovered that this “werewolf” was, in fact, a severely malnourished and neglected German Shepherd mix. She bestowed upon him the name King and wasted no time in taking him to a veterinary clinic.
The list of King’s ailments was distressing, but Megan and the doctors were determined to tackle each one diligently. His most critical issues included scabies, a broken pelvis, and a broken tail – all requiring surgical intervention.
“My vet thinks he got hit by a car, and that would explain how his tail was so messed up, too,” Megan explained. “That injury happened months ago because, by the time I got him, it had already started to heal incorrectly. With such a damaged pelvis, he wasn’t able to get around far on his own to find food, so he was extremely skinny and dehydrated.”
Although King’s health gave him an appearance beyond his years, he was, in fact, just a year old. Due to his contagious diseases, Megan had to keep him isolated from the other animals she cared for.
Fortunately, King’s appetite returned, and his portion sizes gradually increased. As his condition improved, the time came for the much-needed surgeries to repair his broken pelvis and tail.
Good News – The Operations Were Successful!
It took time and a tremendous amount of effort, but with the unwavering support of Megan and the veterinary team, King achieved the seemingly impossible. He defied the odds and stood on his own four paws once more.
Megan holds hope that King will soon find a loving forever home. She longs for a compassionate family to embrace him and give him the safe, caring environment he deserves.
“It’s hard to think that all those cars passed him by and never stopped,” Megan expressed. “No one wanted to bring him home or help him because he looked so bad… But all it took was one person.”
Thanks to individuals like the woman who called for help and Megan, who wholeheartedly stepped in, the world becomes a better place. These acts of kindness and compassion remind us that every life, no matter how dire the circumstances, is worth saving.
