Losing someone we admire is never easy, especially when they have touched our lives with their talent. Today, we mourn the loss of Tom Smothers, one-half of the iconic singing comedy duo, the Smothers Brothers. Tom passed away at the age of 86 after battling cancer.

Tom’s younger brother, Dick Smothers, confirmed the devastating news and shared heartfelt words about their relationship. He said, “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone would want in their life, he was a one-of-a-kind creative partner.” Their bond was like a “good marriage” that grew stronger over the course of 60 years. Dick expressed his deep gratitude for the time they shared, both on and off the stage, calling themselves truly blessed.

The Smothers Brothers became household names through their immensely popular CBS variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which aired from 1967 to 1969. However, their outspokenness on various issues, including support for the civil rights movement and criticism of the Vietnam War, led to the show’s cancellation. The network and censorship authorities were unwilling to air such controversial opinions.

Years later, Tom Smothers reflected on the frustration they felt. In a 2019 interview for “All Arts TV,” he expressed his ongoing frustration about their firing, which still stirred up strong emotions even after five decades. His candid statement brought forth a wave of laughter and understanding.

Despite their reputation as comedians, Tom and Dick Smothers considered themselves primarily as folk singers. It was their musical talents that initially gained them popularity. Their comedy show gained immense traction and even surpassed the ratings of one of the era’s most popular shows, Bonanza. This success ultimately led to them having their own show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

Looking back on their journey, Dick Smothers shared his excitement and disbelief about their achievement in an interview with CBS News, saying, “It was the biggest thrill, it was unbelievable!”

Today, as we mourn the loss of Tom Smothers, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family. Let us come together as fans of this remarkable musician and comedian to share our support during this difficult time.
