Missouri couple celebrates 80th wedding anniversary on New Year's Day

At a lively gathering in Valley Park, Missouri, Andrew and Bertha Kowalcyk joyously celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary on New Year’s Day. Surrounded by their loved ones at Cape Albeon Lakeside Retirement Living, this extraordinary couple marked a milestone that very few have the pleasure of experiencing.

Andrew, a sprightly 103-year-old, and his vibrant 102-year-old wife, Bertha, were both born in New Hampshire. Fate brought them together one fateful night at a dance at the University of New Hampshire. Their love story began when they fortuitously picked the same number in a lottery system that paired dance partners.

Just one month later, they went on their first date, and the rest is history. Andrew proposed to Bertha in October 1943, with the understanding that their wedding would have to wait until after World War II, as Andrew was serving in the Navy. However, their deep love for each other altered their plans.

Bertha vividly recalls the fateful phone call from Andrew, saying he had changed his mind about waiting. He wanted to marry her sooner rather than later. When asked for a date, Bertha mentioned the significance of New Year’s Day. Without hesitation, Andrew agreed.

With a twist of fate and a heart full of love, the couple tied the knot on January 1, 1944. However, their journey didn’t stop there. Andrew and Bertha went on to raise a beautiful family of six children. Today, their love has extended to 31 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

During the heartwarming celebration for their 80th wedding anniversary, the couple was surrounded by family and friends who couldn’t help but be inspired by their enduring love. The room was filled with laughter and tears of joy, as generations came together to honor this remarkable couple.

Andrew and Bertha Kowalcyk’s remarkable love story serves as an inspiration to all. Their unwavering commitment to each other for over eight decades is a testament to the power of love and genuine companionship. It is a reminder that true love can endure the passage of time and the challenges that life presents.
