Jodie Foster admits she turned down most iconic role in film history

Jodie Foster, the talented actress known for her captivating performances, has recently opened up about a decision that altered the course of her career. In a candid conversation on The Graham Norton Show, Foster admitted that she had been offered the iconic role of Princess Leia in the original Star Wars series but had to decline due to her commitment to another film.

Reflecting on this missed opportunity, Foster acknowledged that her life could have taken a completely different path if she hadn’t made that decision.

Jodie Foster, 61, revealed that the rumours are true. She was cast in the original Star Wars series as Princess Leia but had to turn down the famous role because she was already playing a role in a Disney movie

It was ultimately Carrie Fisher who went on to portray the beloved Princess Leia in the Star Wars trilogy and solidify her place in cinematic history. Fisher reprised the role in subsequent Star Wars films until her untimely passing in 2016, leaving fans with her final appearances in The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

During her appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Foster, alongside a star-studded cast including Olivia Colman, Lorraine Kelly, Wanda Sykes, Austin Butler, Josh Brolin, Calvin Harris, and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, also discussed her recent Academy Award nomination, which marked her return to the Oscars after almost three decades.

Foster’s latest project, True Detective, showcases her exceptional talent in a brand-new role. She stars as detective Liz Danvers alongside Kali Reis, forming the series’ first all-female leading duo.

Speaking about her character and the final episode of True Detective, Foster teased, “She is just awful; everything you can hate – racist, selfish, and very horny. I can’t say much about the final episode, but it is the best, it is extraordinary. No one sees that end coming.”

Jodie said: 'I got the part of Princess Leia (pictured being played by Carrie Fisher) but couldn't do it because I was already doing a Disney film. My life could have been so different, and I would have liked to have had the hair!'

While reflecting on her missed opportunity to play Princess Leia, Foster humorously added, “I got the part of Princess Leia, but I couldn’t do it because I was already committed to a Disney film. My life could have been so different, and I would have liked to have had the hair!”

She won her first Academy Award at the age of 27 for her lead role in The Accused (1989) and triumphed again in 1992 for her unforgettable portrayal of rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs.

Despite her remarkable achievements, Foster has always prioritized being a mother to her two sons, Charles and Christopher ‘Kit’. In a recent interview, Foster shared that she intentionally shielded her children from her Hollywood star persona to ensure they saw her as their mom and not just a famous actress.
