Taylor Nation, Swift’s amazing in-house marketing team, recently tweeted, “Cannot wait to do the chant in Singapore, Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon, Madrid, Lyon, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Zürich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Munich, Warsaw, Vienna, Toronto, Vancouver, Miami, New Orleans, and Indianapolis.”
Although it’s easier to fit two-syllable cities into the chant, we believe the dedicated fandom can find a way to include cities like Gelsenkirchen and Indianapolis in that brief pause.
The origin of the ‘Blank Space’ chant
The ‘Blank Space’ chant originated from Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour movie. In the movie, which was filmed in Sydney, Australia in 2015, Swift grabs an iron golf club during the bridge section of the song and strikes a metal pole sticking out of the stage with a rhythmic “boom, boom.” She then pauses and repeats the action, but this time sings “Syd-ney.”
This eight-count sound effect has now become a TikTok trend, with fans recreating it all week at the iconic Sydney Opera House. The chant has grown louder and more popular with each concert on the Eras Tour.
During the first night of the tour, Swift acknowledged the audience’s participation. “By the way, do you know how cool it was when I was singing ‘Blank Space’?” she asked. “Can we do it again?” The crowd enthusiastically responded with a resounding “Syd-ney” after she sang the line “Boys only want love if it’s torture.”
Swift mentioned that a staggering 83,000 fans packed inside Accor Stadium on Sunday night, with 82,000 on Saturday and 81,000 on Friday. After one more night in Australia, she will be heading to Singapore for six shows before taking a well-deserved two-month break.
