He has a very succesful and Professional career as an actor. His roles were not easy ones that anyone can accomplish. But this complex roles that required great stunts and the actors will to do them on his own is showing the results nowadays.
In the beginning, he was not sure if he wants to be an actor or not. His dream was getting in to University of Southern California, but his family could not afford. In his youth he had interested in athletics and wanted a career in this way instead of acting. He was good at basketball and wanted to start a professional basketball career. He even got a scholarship from University of Southern California.
“I never did school plays. I had no interest,” says Tom.
But unfortunately, he was not good as he wanted to be. He could not manage to play against his better teammates. “I was not good enough” he said.

Starting his career as an actor
He started doing little parts of commericals and showed himself on The Dating Game. He does not like to mention that show. “It was embarrasing” he said. And added that he lost twice.

At his mid-thirties he did take other small jobs in many television series. After these shows he made six television shows.

Quantum leap with Magnum P.I
“The luckiest thing that happened was that I didn’t get a real job until I was 35,” he says. Then adds “When I was 25, I looked 35 but sounded 15. There are a lot of very good actors who make it as younger leading men but don’t graduate — because the audience won’t accept them as grown up.”
The series aired for 8 years and it brought huge and success fame for Tom. Thanks to Magnum P.I, Tom won Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
“I think if Magnum hadn’t worked out, I’d never have worked again in this business,” he says.

He also took a small part in famous comedy show Friends. He acted as Monica Geller’s boyfriend.

Struggling through doing his own stunts
Many of the actors and actressess leaves their dangerous stunst to professional stunt people. But not for Tom Selleck. He had done most of his own stunts. But this came with it’s problems.
“My back’s kind of messed up,” he said. And adds, “When you do stunts in movies—I do a lot of them—you’re taking a risk, but you’re also sitting around a lot. So you might do a fight scene, and then you sit in your chair, and it’s not like you have a personal trainer saying, “Okay, we’re ready to go, but Tom needs ten minutes of stretching and warm-up. And I think the price,” he says, “I see it with peers, I talk to them sometimes. You just see the price of all those stunts. They weren’t that hard, but I think it’s the stop-and-go of all that stuff.”

Tom says that instead of going to the gym he works out in his family ranch in California. “I have a 63-acre ranch, and I do not all, but a lot of, the grunt work. Clearing brush, planting trees. We’ve got about a hundred ancient oaks I planted. I’ve probably planted a thousand trees myself.” He says.

Family life of Tom Selleck
Tom is a family man. After his career as a successful actor, he is known for his loyalty to his family. They are together for more than 30 year. He says that he met her, Jillie Mack, Cats musical. Mack was the lead actor.

“She had to go on. I was hemming and hawing, and she finally asked, ‘Do you want to meet for a cocktail?’” Tom says. After that they married in 1987. After a year their daughter was born. Ever since he cares for his family against everything.

“I quit Magnum to have a family,” he says. And adds “It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that.” And she said “We both thought it was the best environment for Hannah to grow up,”

His love for horses
Being born in a ranch, daughter of Tom Selleck, Hannah Selleck, loved to rode their horses from the beginning. She even competed professionally in competitions. Unfortunately she had an accident in 2018. She broke her leg and the doctors said that she might not be able to walk. But by good luck the case went different.
After the incident and recovery Family turned their heads to breeding and training horses.
