In 2020, Allison Fisher began feeling what she believed was stomach pain. The pain persisted and she started noticing irregularities in her menstrual cycle. Shockingly, she had a period that lasted an entire year! Despite her suffering, Allison avoided seeking medical help because of her fear of being judged about her weight. She hoped that by ignoring the problem, it would eventually disappear. The fear and uncertainty became even more pronounced with the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Fisher’s condition continued to deteriorate. She discovered a mass growing on her stomach, causing it to become “rock hard.” Standing or driving for longer than a few minutes became agonizingly difficult. It felt as though her organs were being crushed, making it impossible for her to go about her daily life. Filled with trepidation, Allison finally decided to confide in a doctor when the mass started affecting her ability to breathe, coinciding with her mother’s cancer diagnosis in 2021.
Upon meeting with Dr. Martin Martino, a gynecologic oncology surgeon at Ascension St. Vincent’s, Allison was delivered shocking news. She had a massive 104-lb. ovarian cyst inside her body, containing around 46 liters of fluid. Surgery was the only option. Due to the complexities involved, a team of specialists from the pulmonary and cardiology fields was assembled to ensure the best possible outcome. The use of robotic technology during the operation made it even more extraordinary.
Reflecting on the experience, Allison emphasized the importance of teamwork and expressed gratitude for the medical professionals who played a crucial role in her recovery. The surgery provided her with a “second chance” at life, allowing her to regain her mobility and freedom.
