The creature that caught Leslie’s attention was a Megalopyge Opercularis larva, commonly known as the puss caterpillar. These caterpillars, which can grow to a little over 1 inch long, are found in many parts of the United States, from New Jersey to Florida and as far west as Texas. The severity of the sting depends on where it occurs and how many bristles are embedded in the skin.

While mowing his lawn in rural Virginia, he accidentally brushed against a tree and was stung by one of these caterpillars. The burning sensation lasted for a day, but the blister and irritation remained visible for several weeks.
If you happen to be stung by a puss caterpillar, it is important to take immediate action. Use tape to remove the venomous hairs from the affected area and wash it gently with soap and water. Applying hydrocortisone cream or baking soda can help alleviate itching. However, if the symptoms worsen, it is crucial to seek medical attention.
While puss caterpillars are rarely deadly, their sting can cause anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening. Therefore, it is essential to be aware of these creatures and avoid any contact with them.
