After becoming an overnight phenomenon on the hit show “Fixer Upper,” Chip Gaines understood the value of retaining perspective.

Gaines, whose new book, “No Pain, No Gaines,” is out now, remembered the precise moment he knew celebrity had become too much for him to endure.

“It was a bit of a sad moment when I realized that fame had practically taken over and consumed my entire existence.”

Gaines was visiting a flea market with his wife Joanna and their family when the incident occurred.

Duke, the family’s youngest son, once moved away but was still about 10 yards ahead of Gaines. However, as soon as he came, a mob gathered to greet him.

“We had certainly reached the stage in our careers when we were recognizable in public, so the experience had started to seem a little bit monotonous for us. However, I sort of lost contact with Duke at the same time.”

“And so I was basically on my way to kind of suck him up and bring him back into a secure area,” he recounted, adding that the fans were asking for pictures, inquiring about his wife, and even squeezing his cheeks at one point.

Gaines, who has five children with Joanna, claims that the tragedy altered him and taught him how to live his life.

“It was a disturbing series of events only because I realized at the time that I wasn’t able to communicate accurately that I was actually a desperate father trying to get my son into a safe place, but at the same time kind of trying to resonate with these people and not be rude and all the things that we struggle with in a typical situation,” he said.

The Magnolia co-founder, 46, claimed it also gave him a shock, making him realize stardom had begun to strip him of his identity.

“But it was a bit of a shock to me, and I’d honestly say it pushed me into a spiral where who I was in this well-known scenario really eclipsed who I was as a father and as a human,” he added.

“And it sort of forced me to rethink whether or not all of this was worthy in some of the important life decisions you have to make in these situations.”

Even from afar, admirers adore Chip and Joanna Gaines. After a tremendously successful five-season run on HGTV that ended in 2018, their show “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home” made a comeback on Discovery+ in January.
