Negativity is conquered and a woman with a rare skin disease finds true love.

We live in a world where social media has amplified our obsession with appearance. It seems that being judged solely on our looks has become the norm, leaving those who don’t fit the stereotypical “ideal” feeling isolated and hurt. Karine de Souza, a 33-year-old woman from Brazil, knows this all too well. Born with Xeroderma Pigmentosum, a rare condition that makes her more susceptible to skin cancer, Karine has spent her entire life protecting her fragile skin with SPF100 sunscreen, even inside her own home.

Karine’s condition, which affects only one in a million people, makes her extremely sensitive to UV rays. Even a few minutes in the sun can cause a painful sunburn that requires extensive medical attention. As a child, she couldn’t spend much time outside due to the risk, leaving her feeling isolated from the outside world. “I don’t feel anything when I expose myself to the light, it doesn’t happen immediately,” she says. “The lesions develop later and need to be removed due to malignancy.” Karine has undergone 130 surgical procedures, including the amputation of her lower lip and a part of her nose, to remove sun-induced sores.

But her struggles go beyond physical pain. Karine has faced strange looks and hurtful comments both online and offline from people who don’t understand her condition. Despite all the suffering, she remains positive, content, and even found love.

Karine and Edmilson

Through social media, Karine met Edmilson, her loving husband, who was captivated by her story and strength. Edmilson has always been by her side and even embraced her three children from a previous marriage, which meant the world to Karine. “He came and taught me that I could live a true love story,” she says. However, their relationship faced its fair share of online criticism. Karine shares that they have received offensive comments, calling her names like “monster, ugly, or a zombie.” Some even questioned the authenticity of their love, suggesting that Karine must be extremely wealthy to have such a young and attractive partner.

But their love prevailed. After getting engaged, a photographer captured their love in beautiful pictures and shared them with a heartfelt caption. The post went viral, with thousands of people congratulating the couple and expressing their admiration for their love and resilience. Karine wants everyone to understand the importance of staying positive and happy. “Be happy, smile, because life only happens once,” she advises.
