Back then, the polio vaccine was not yet available, and Dianne was confined to an iron lung, a 7-foot-long metal tube, for nearly 60 years.

From the confines of her 750-pound iron lung, she earned a high school diploma, took college courses, and even wrote a children’s book.

Despite efforts to keep her breathing, Dianne passed away.

She was one of the longest time users of the iron lung, unable to transition to more modern portable breathing devices due to a spinal deformity caused by polio. Despite the limitations she faced, she celebrated her 60th birthday surrounded by loved ones, receiving letters from people all across the country.
