Former President Jimmy Carter’s family physician, Dr. Michael Raines, has expressed deep concern following the passing of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. He believes that this loss is a significant blow to the former president, who has faced numerous health challenges in recent years.

Jimmy Carter has experienced various health scares, including a cancer diagnosis in 2015 and serious falls in 2019 that required surgeries. However, Dr. Raines believes that the loss of his wife of 77 years will be the toughest challenge yet.

“I’m sure he’ll try to work through this, but it’s such a big loss for him,” Dr. Raines stated. He highlights the strong dependency and deep connection between Jimmy and Rosalynn, both in love and in their relationship and friendship.

The doctor is concerned about Jimmy’s motivation for life during his time in hospice care without Rosalynn. He explains that couples who have been married for a long time and have a strong dependency on each other often experience a rapid decline in health when one of them passes away.

Dr. Raines made the decision for Jimmy Carter to enter hospice care in February, and he reveals that hospice care for dementia patients can accelerate the decline. Rosalynn Carter’s passing came sooner than expected, as she was diagnosed with the disease just six months ago.

Despite their health issues, the Carters remained dedicated to each other and continued to make public appearances. They even advocated for rural healthcare in Plains, Georgia. They successfully worked towards the reopening of the Mercer Medicine Clinic in 2018, which now serves residents not only in Plains but also in surrounding cities.

Dr. Raines emphasizes Rosalynn Carter’s remarkable legacy in rural healthcare, leaving a lasting impact for generations to come. The Carters’ down-to-earth nature, their love for Plains, and their humanitarian work have positively influenced the region.

While there is sadness surrounding Rosalynn’s passing, it’s important to recognize the Carters’ dedication and the impact they have made on the community. Their strength and resilience continue to inspire others even in the midst of personal challenges.
