William Kyle Carpenter, a name you may or may not be familiar with, but what you can never dispute is the fact that he is a bonafide American hero. At the young age of 21, Kyle earned the rank of Lance Corporal in the United States Marines and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 to serve his country.

During a fierce firefight, a grenade landed perilously close to where Kyle and another Marine were bravely fighting. Without a moment’s hesitation, Kyle made a split-second decision that would demonstrate his unwavering strength. In a selfless act of heroism, he leapt into action, using his own body as a shield to protect his comrade, ultimately sacrificing himself to save a fellow Marine’s life.

Kyle’s choice to offer up his life in such a selfless manner had profound consequences. The explosion caused devastating injuries, leaving his body filled with shrapnel. His skull and facial bones were shattered, part of his jaw was lost, and one of his lungs collapsed. When he arrived at Camp Bastion, he was even declared “P.E.A” (patient expired on arrival).

But miraculously, against all odds, Kyle survived. Over the next two years, he underwent an incredible forty surgeries to repair the damage inflicted upon him. His bravery did not go unnoticed. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his valor and became a recipient of the prestigious Medal of Honor, presented to him by President Barack Obama.

Today, Kyle has retired from his military service and is pursuing a degree at the University of South Carolina. He continues to inspire others with his incredible story of courage and selflessness.
