November’s full beaver moon

November’s full moon, known as the beaver moon, is set to illuminate the night sky this weekend, providing a spectacular display for all to see. The moon will reach its peak fullness in the early hours of Monday, specifically at 4:16 a.m. ET, according to EarthSky.

The beaver moon gets its name from the industrious animal that retreats to its lodge in anticipation of winter. During the peak of the North American fur trade from the 1500s to the 1800s, November was also the season for beaver trapping due to the animal’s thicker coat this time of year. This connection adds an interesting historical context to the sighting of this full moon.

Depending on your location and local weather conditions, you will be able to witness the beaver moon for about one day before and after its full phase. To make the most of this celestial event, find a space with an unobstructed view of the sky, away from trees, buildings, and bright lights. While observing the moon does not require any equipment, using binoculars or a telescope can help you appreciate its finer details.

Dr. Noah Petro, a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, shares his insight on the significance of witnessing this lunar event: “When people look at the Moon, I hope they first take in that it’s the same Moon that their grandparents, great grandparents, and so on, have seen. For millennia, humans have looked to the Moon, and it’s looked similar for all of human history.”

In addition to the beaver moon, there are other fascinating celestial events to look forward to in 2023. The final full moon of the year, known as the cold moon, will grace the sky on December 26, according to the Farmers’ Almanac. If you enjoy meteor showers, keep an eye out for the Leonids, which will continue until December 2. And mark your calendars for two upcoming meteor showers next month: the Geminids on December 13-14 and the Ursids on December 21-22.

Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of the beaver moon and marvel at how it connects us to the past, present, and future. Enjoy the wonders of the night sky and embrace the sense of awe that it brings.
