Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable man who touched the hearts of many with his unwavering love and dedication. Dick Hoyt, aged 80, peacefully passed away at his home in Holland, Massachusetts. As we reflect on his legacy, we are reminded of the incredible journey he embarked on with his son, Rick Hoyt, who was born with cerebral palsy and quadriplegia.

Through their inspiring bond, Dick and Rick participated in over a thousand road races, with the Boston Marathon being their pinnacle. Their story garnered international attention for its sheer determination and resilience. Their unwavering commitment to one another captured the spirit of unconditional love between a father and son.

Born in 1962, Rick faced numerous challenges that limited his ability to move or speak. However, through the loving support of his family, including his dedicated father, Rick defied the odds. In his 2010 book “Devoted: The Story of a Father’s Love for His Son,” Dick Hoyt shared their journey, stating, “We had long since learned how to read our son’s grins and nods. But even though everyone in the family was skilled at figuring out what Rick needed, we were still only making educated guesses.”

In 1972, thanks to the pioneering work of Tufts University engineers, Rick was given the gift of communication. A computer was developed that allowed him to select letters by touching his skull, giving him a voice to express his thoughts and desires. His very first words were “Go Bruins,” a testament to his unwavering passion for sports.
