It’s hard to believe it’s been just over a year since country music legend Naomi Judd passed away. The iconic singer’s tragic death by suicide came as a shock to many, but perhaps no one suffered more than Naomi’s daughter, Wynonna.

Naomi and Wynonna shared a bond that went beyond the typical mother-daughter relationship. Not only was Naomi Wynonna’s mom, but she was also her bandmate in The Judds. Together, the mother-daughter duo enjoyed incredible success within the country music scene, winning numerous awards and delivering one hit after another.

Sadly, Naomi was forced to retire in 1991 due to health issues, but Wynonna continued to have a successful solo career. Even though they pursued separate paths, their connection remained strong.

At the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, Wynonna accepted the Country Champion Award and opened up about her mother’s death. It was a heartbreaking moment as she shared the details of that fateful day.

“I graduated high school in 1982,” Wynonna began. “In 1983, I got a record deal with RCA Records, and I got on a Silver Eagle bus with my mama and did her hair every night for 10 years for free.”

Tragically, on August 30th of last year, Naomi took her own life. Wynonna rushed to her mother’s house and was there when she passed away. Despite the devastating loss, Wynonna showed incredible strength as she shared, “I walked into the room and I held her in my arms, I kissed her on the forehead, shut her eyes and said, ‘I love you, Mom.’”

The timing of Naomi’s death added an extra layer of sadness. The Judds were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame the very next day. This dream they had worked so hard for was now overshadowed by grief.

During the induction ceremony, Wynonna’s younger sister Ashley tearfully expressed her sorrow, saying, “I’m sorry that she couldn’t hang on until today.”

Wynonna, with a broken heart, spoke from the depths of her emotions. “I didn’t prepare anything tonight because I knew mom would probably talk the most,” she confessed. “I’m gonna make this fast, because my heart’s broken, and I feel so blessed. It’s a very strange dynamic, to be this broken and this blessed.”

In conclusion, Wynonna left the audience with a powerful message. “Let me tell you something, it’s getting harder and harder out there. Never give up on your dreams.” Despite the pain she carried, Wynonna’s words resonated with hope and determination.
