Ricki Lake, the former talk show host, is living her best life and recently shared a powerful photo to celebrate it. In a candid selfie posted on Instagram, Lake bared not just her emotions, but also her skin.
In the photo, the 54-year-old is seen sitting in an outdoor tub, surrounded by tall redwood trees, wearing nothing but a smile. Along with the picture, she wrote, “These days are the best of my life. At 54 and a half years old (young!), I am grateful for everything that has brought me here. I have reached a place of complete self-acceptance and self-love.”
Lake’s journey to self-love began in 2019 but it wasn’t until 2022 that she made it public. In a previously unseen video that she shared in December 2022, Lake documented the moment she shaved her head. In the video’s description, she acknowledged her struggle with androgenetic alopecia, the cause of her hair loss.
“I have never shared this raw video footage before, but I feel it’s important to do so now, for those of you who have followed my story and have been invested in it,” Lake wrote in the caption. “Some of you know my struggle all too well, and I want you to know that I truly understand. In this video, you can see me find a place of peace, liberation, and most importantly, self-love and self-acceptance.”
Since shaving her head, Lake’s hair has grown back, and she has embraced having a “natural gray and sometimes wild unruly head of hair.” Her message to others struggling with self-acceptance is to find peace and acceptance, as life is too short to worry about things beyond our control.
While some users have criticized Lake’s decision to share the photo, she remains unfazed. As she believes, we have the option to follow the creators we like and accept their freedom to share whatever they feel comfortable with. After all, worrying about the opinions of others is a waste of time.
