Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, aged 95, is suffering from dementia. The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Carter family and comes as her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, receives palliative care at their home in Plains, Georgia.

The Carter Center stated in a press release that 95-year-old Rosalynn Carter “continues to live happily at home with her husband, enjoying springtime in Plains and visits from loved ones,” according to NBC News.

“Mrs. Carter has been the country’s foremost advocate for mental health for much of her life, improving access to care and reducing the stigma around mental health issues,” the statement mentions.

“One in 10 older Americans suffers from dementia, a condition that affects overall mental health. We recognize, as she did over half a century ago, that stigma is often a barrier that prevents people and their families from seeking and obtaining much-needed support.

We hope that our sharing of this news will enhance important conversations around kitchen tables and in medical offices throughout the country,” the Carter Center conveyed.

At 98 years old, Jimmy Carter is the longest-living former U.S. president. The family announced on February 18th that the former president, who has faced several health challenges including cancer, has chosen to receive palliative care at home and await the end surrounded by loved ones.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been married for 76 years, the longest presidential marriage in history. Their love story began during World War II and has endured the trials of political life. Rosalynn Carter expanded the role of First Lady.
