As alternative housing options gain popularity among individuals seeking affordable and customizable living spaces, one woman, Jo Ann Ussery, embarked on a remarkable housing adventure of her own. Instead of opting for the usual alternatives such as buses or tiny houses, Jo Ann saw the potential in an old Boeing 727 airliner and transformed it into a truly unique and unorthodox residence.

Unleashing Human Ingenuity

Jo Ann Ussery’s story is a testament to human ingenuity and the power to turn dreams into reality. With an adventurous spirit and a deep love for aircraft, Jo Ann set out on a journey that would capture the world’s imagination.

Her quest began in the early 2000s when she purchased a defunct Boeing 727 plane. Rather than letting it go to waste, Jo Ann saw an opportunity to create a home like no other and embarked on an ambitious endeavor to transform the airplane into a suitable living space.

A Monument to Vision and Perseverance

Jo Ann meticulously designed and restored the interior of the airplane, converting its cabins into a warm and uniquely charming house. While the project presented its challenges, Jo Ann’s unwavering dedication to her vision paid off in the end.

Today, Jo Ann Ussery’s Boeing 727 residence stands proudly as a testament to her singular vision and unwavering perseverance. Nestled amidst the beauty of nature, this one-of-a-kind airplane home has garnered international attention and praise.

Thinking Beyond the Ordinary

When it comes to finding innovative housing solutions, Jo Ann’s Boeing 727 home exemplifies the capacity to think outside the box. Her inspiring journey serves as a reminder to everyone with aspirations and passions that the sky is truly the limit. With devotion and ingenuity, incredible dreams can become a reality.

From Devastation to Inspiration

Jo Ann’s housing adventure began in 1993 when her home in Benoit, Mississippi was devastated. As a widow with limited funds and two children to care for, finding a new place to live seemed like an insurmountable challenge.

Initially considering a trailer, Jo Ann soon realized that it wouldn’t accommodate her large family. It was then that Bob, her air traffic controller in-law, proposed a unique idea – living on a plane.

Love at First Sight

Intrigued by the concept, Jo Ann went to see a disassembled Boeing 727. It was love at first sight, and she seized the opportunity by purchasing it for a mere $2,000, shipping included. Affectionately naming her new home “Little Trump” after discovering that Donald Trump also owned a private Boeing 727, Jo Ann set out to transform it with a budget of less than $30,000.

Turning Dreams into Reality

To ensure stability during the interior renovations, Jo Ann positioned the plane on her property with its nose overlooking a serene lake, anchoring the tail with a substantial amount of concrete.

With an interior space of approximately 1,500 square feet, Jo Ann wasted no time in revamping the airplane. Despite the non-functioning windows, the presence of air conditioning made this issue inconsequential.

Once the major renovations were complete, Jo Ann focused on enhancing the comfort and aesthetics of her unique home. She transformed three cabins into bedrooms, created a cozy living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, and even installed a laundry facility.

A Luxurious Master Bathroom

Perhaps the most impressive of all the transformations was turning the airplane’s cockpit into a lavish master bathroom. Complete with a soaking tub, the layout was meticulously designed to give the user a sense of floating while enjoying the breathtaking view of the lake.

Remarkably, every aspect of the renovation was executed by Jo Ann herself. She lived happily aboard her converted plane from 1995 to 1999 before deciding to transform it into a public museum.

Leaving a Legacy

During the relocation process for public display, the plane unfortunately slipped off the carriage and disintegrated. Despite this setback, Jo Ann’s ingenuity and determination have left an indelible mark on the world of unique housing. Her story continues to inspire individuals of all ages, reminding us that with passion and perseverance, extraordinary dreams can become a tangible reality.
