Bing Crosby and David Bowie’s iconic duet of “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” is a beloved Christmas classic. But what many people don’t know is the fascinating story behind their collaboration.

Bing Crosby: The Christmas Legend

When we think of Christmas music, Bing Crosby’s name immediately comes to mind. His rendition of “White Christmas” has become a timeless treasure, selling over 50 million copies and holding the title of the best-selling Christmas song of all time.

Crosby’s association with Christmas was so strong that he hosted 42 Christmas Television Specials throughout his life. But it was his final one in 1977, shortly before his passing, that would become legendary.

David Bowie’s Reluctance

While their performance on Bing Crosby’s Christmas Special seemed harmonious, behind the scenes, David Bowie was reportedly less than thrilled initially. In fact, he hated the song “Little Drummer Boy” and only agreed to perform because his mother loved Bing Crosby.

The solution? The writers of the show came up with the idea of a counter-melody that Bowie could sing simultaneously while Crosby performed “Little Drummer Boy.” Thus, “Peace on Earth” was born.

A Surprising Bond

When Bowie arrived at the television studio with his wife, Angela Bowie, wearing full-length mink coats, heavy makeup, and bright red hair, Crosby was less than impressed. But as they worked closer together, a surprising bond formed.

Bing’s daughter, Mary Crosby, recalled her father’s transformation during their recording session. She said, “You could see them both collectively relax, and then magic was made.” Bing’s son, Nathaniel Crosby, added, “I think the producers told him to take the lipstick off and take the earring out. It was just incredible to see the contrast.”

Bing Crosby’s Lasting Legacy

Tragically, Bing Crosby passed away just one month after recording the duet with David Bowie. The song aired after his death, becoming one of Bowie’s best-selling singles, selling an estimated 400,000 copies in the UK alone.

Reflecting on the experience, Bowie described it as unique and surreal. He said, “He was just… not there. He had the words in front of him. It was the most bizarre experience. I didn’t know anything about him. I just knew my mother liked him.”

Despite their differences, these legendary musicians created something truly special. Their collaboration on “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” continues to bring joy to audiences year after year.
